Welsh Newton and Llanrothal Community Access Point
Calling all budding cyber surfers.... Welsh Newton village hall
is ready to become your gateway to the internet.
As part of Herefordshire In Touch (HIT) funded by Advantage West
Midlands (through the single regeneration budget), the European
Regional Development Fund, HASP (the Herefordshire Access to
Services Partnership) and GOWM Welsh Newton Village Hall has now
been confirmed as one of a growing number of Community Access
Points. This means that it has been equipped with computers,
laptops, a broadband router and variety of PC programmes -
everything needed to turn it into a virtual internet cafe,
available to anyone in the Welsh Newton and Llanrothal area who
doesn't have their own equipment, or broadband access, but wants to
join the digital age.
The 'Point' will be available to all, with the support of a team
happy and willing to show those who've never had access to a
computer before how to become a skilled surfer. In the near future
there will be courses on offer, computer game evenings, film nights
and a film making club.
"Though personal computers only became a reality around 20 years
ago, they have had as great an effect on the way people work and
communicate as the industrial revolution and the telephone,"
explained Elissa Swinglehurt, secretary of the CAP steering
commitee. "Not everyone has been able to take advantage of their
benefits though. Some people have never had a chance to learn how
to use them. Others are too far from a telephone exchange to be
able to access broadband.
The Community Access Point is set up to rectify this and it is
going to be available for anyone in the area to do whatever they
want. They'll be able to use email, try all sorts of software, even
sample internet telephony or see satellite images of their homes
using the Google Earth service. What's more, use of the facility is
free. There can't be many facilities this good for this
little!"
